Eider-ling In The Harbour…
(Eider ducks in Craster harbour…)
The erratic North Sea tide swayed and jousted inside
The dank harbour walls at Craster, feisty and emphatic, urged
On by a fierce and chilly channel wind, as brusque clouds
Teased the sunlight by tousling and dulling its gleam with grey shrouds.
The broiling ocean buoyed what seemed to be small floats in a hapless ride,
Some brown, some white, turning and swirling, as the maelstrom surged.
But then two heads were unfurled, one from within the white down
Of a male eider duck’s neck and the other from the female’s plumage of dull brown…
The flotilla bobbed and rested within the relative calm of Craster’s protective harbour walls,
Before the relentless search for blue mussels began again for those small floats in raging squalls…
