MY POEM ABOUT PORT ISAAC, CORNWALL...

 April 2018: Port Isaac, Cornwall…

Port Isaac’s tide retreated

In obeisance to an unlikely April sun

And rendered vessels listing.

Chunky links of chains rusting,

Marked damp sand, tracing

Captive lengths to boats,

Sea-dogs on leads, thrusting,

Their escapes denied and defeated…

Jackdaw’s keen pearl eye

Frowned amongst twists of weed.

It scavenged nearby, confidently,

Poking, sifting, landward facing,

Black plumage shining iridescently,

Its movements stuttered, pacing,

Overseen by an inquisitive gull,

Passive, yet glaring diffidently,

Its demeanour otherwise awry…

Pete Ray…

(April 2018…)

Port Isaac: the chains, the vessels, the jackdaw and the gull…
