The Influencer, The Marauder…
A warm spring day blossomed at Hawkesmill, despite a searing breeze,
As Walsall Wood, the guests, performed with laudable industry
And stubborn hosts Coventry Colliery secured another victory in their quest for promotion.
The sports ground, surrounded by a plethora of awakening trees,
Amongst which an unseen, insistent chiffchaff called incessantly,
Was graced by the formidable presence of one Jean Dakouri, a study in force and motion…
Shaven-headed, keen-eyed, beard prominent, the midfielder foraged,
Hacked for possession of the ball, his sturdy challenges destructive,
Often on the fringes of over-zealous, yet somehow bitingly sumptuous.
He distributed the ball with sensible intent, relishing tussles in the midfield, ravaged
By his marauding, his influence and attitude. The assassin, the ball-winner, so combative
And yet such an amiable character, his smile at odds with his tackling, evil and egregious…

The splendid Jean Dakouri, who has recently bolstered Colliery’s push for promotion.

His geniality is so open too and he never forgets me, always greeting me with a hug and recalling past matches.

| CONGENIAL... |
He once rescued the famous Bodging (my badger hand-puppet) which attends all matches with me, for I had left him in a grandstand at Racing Club Warwick, where Coventry United had played.

I had been driving home when I realised that the puppet had been left behind, so I stopped in a lay-by and rang United’s manager Edwin Greaves, who was still at the ground and he kindly asked Jean to see whether it was still on the seat where I had left it.
It was…
And The Bodging was saved…
Colliery won the above match v Walsall Wood by 3-0, an unfortunate own-goal by the visiting goalie/skipper Sam Cooksey opening the scoring.
Despite danger from Walsall’s long throws, home ‘keeper Nathan Pearce only had one real save to make but it was a good one.
Further goals by Ty Wilson and Edgars Nikolajevs completed a good day for Colliery…
