LEDGE BEFORE FLEDGE... (My new poem about cormorants nesting at Mutton Cove, Godrevy, Cornwall...)

 Ledge Before Fledge…

(Cormorants at Mutton Cove, Godrevy, Cornwall…)

There had been a chance to peer down from some height

At the cove, hoping perhaps a seal or two might just have lingered

But that was not the case, although one or two popped inquisitive heads

From the green tinged ocean, tousling near the base of cliffs, cruel, harsh and dark,

Whilst a few more lounged upon Godrevy’s lighthouse rocks, posing unencumbered…

There were black patches upon piles of untidily entwined dry sticks, just within sight

Upon cliff ledges, which upon closer inspection were nests of unhindered

Cormorants, the occupants peacefully huddled and serene in their crude straw beds.

One adult curled its lush black neck to preen, its gloss contrasting with the stark

Dryness of the rock face, its yellow bill a delicate tool, whilst its chicks slumbered…

Nesting cormorants, very sedate, undisturbed…
