 Gornal 3-4 Coventry Colliery...

The Mowdog's thoughts...

Colliery, already champions of Midland League 3, travelled to Gornal for their final league game of the season, where the players and staff were presented with a fine trophy and their individual medals...

The match was a decent spectacle, involving seven goals and a missed spot-kick, which might have seen Coventry's Ty Wilson complete a first-period hat-trick but it wasn't to be.

At 1-3, the guests were coasting but errors offered the hosts two second-period breakaway goals to regain parity but a very late winner by replacement Joe Wright (his second goal of the afternoon) gave Colliery the win which meant that the team had beaten every other team in the league at least once...

Gornal had drawn 2-2 at Colliery earlier in the season but their efforts to be the only team not beaten by the champions were subsequently dashed at the death.

Wilson netted the opener from close range, following good foraging work by skipper Callum Regan, neat play by Bryan Badu-Wa-Badu and an unselfish pass from Josh Low. Then, after Jack Allen had equalised with a jumping shot past Nathan Pearce, Wilson's second goal was a deflected free-kick effort from downtown which looped over home goalie John Hickman.

After the interval, Joe Wright, usually a defender, appeared in an attacking role and quickly shovelled in a fine goal from 18 yards, before two defensive lapses allowed Gornal to net twice in quick succession. Sameer Arshad chased well and set up the lively Theo Boakye-Yiadom to score and then raced clear himself to equalise soon afterwards.

However, Wright won the contest late on, snapping up a rebound, after Hickman had saved a low drive by Wilson.

It had been a lively afternoon, with Charlie Swann starring for the hosts in midfield and Charlie Palmer-Field defending well. Hickman made several very stylish saves too, although tall skipper Baba Mohammed was often influential as a wide forward.

Coventry's players worked hard, despite no pressure being on them but although Badu was often effective on the flanks, his finishing wasn't accurate. Regan urged his team on, as usual, whilst Wilson was always a threat and Jean Dakouri was terrific, making challenges, blocks and interceptions throughout the match. He made a dribble once and miscued a shot at goal too... To be fair though, he dropped from midfield into defence after the recess and excelled...

Pearce made one outstanding low save before the break and was involved throughout with his verbal encouragement and strong kicking.

Certainly Colliery fashioned more goal chances and deserved the victory, albeit making the job harder for themselves after half-time...

So, celebrations for Colliery on the day Coventry City celebrated their promotion to the Premier League around the city and in front of thousands of their fans...
